Summary of Position

TTMRU has an immediate opening for a CT Detector Physicist in our Computed Tomography (CT) business unit located in Vernon Hills, IL, a located about 35 miles Northwest of Chicago, IL.

As a CT Detector Physicist at Toshiba Medical Research Institute USA (TMRU), you have the opportunity to participate in the research and development of Toshiba's next generation CT systems. You will research and develop CT detector technology by working with cross functional teams to develop design solutions and prototypes that will become the basis for Toshiba's future products. Through your research, you will identify opportunities for significant improvements in performance of detection technologies. Through advanced development programs, you will turn these opportunities into practical product design solutions for medical imaging. Working with cross-disciplinary teams, you will lead design studies, feasibility studies, and prototype development programs to ultimately prove technology and transfer it for commercialization by Toshiba Medical Systems.

Responsibilities

  • Research and develop models of detection that allow analysis of critical sensor or electronics factors.
  • Design and conduct laboratory experiments to characterize detector performance.
  • Analyze the need for calibrations and develop practical calibration algorithms.
  • Oversee and advise research performed by more junior colleagues.

Qualifications

Education

  • PhD or equivalent in Physics or related field (Medical Physics, High Energy Physics, Nuclear Physics / Engineering, etc.).

Experience

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in the following areas:

  • Theory of radiation detection of scintillating and direct conversion sensors and front end electronics.
  • Design and characterization of ionizing radiation detectors. Demonstrated understanding of critical issues and limitations in state of the art technology.
  • Modeling detection processes such as X-ray interactions, transport of electron-hole pairs in direct conversion sensors, response of front end encoding electronics.
  • Experimental design and laboratory techniques to characterize detector performance.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills including verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated accomplishments through peer reviewed scientific papers, conference talks, patents, etc.

Some experience in the following areas will be beneficial for the successful candidate:

  • Medical imaging using ionizing radiation (CT, X-ray, PET, or SPECT)
  • Radiation detector and imaging system simulation and modelling tools GEANT / GATE and Comsol
  • Statistical signal estimation algorithms
  • Application of machine learning algorithms to detection and signal processing problems
